What is it and what should I know about it: The best way of treating it is early diagnosis.
Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by the gradual loss of skeletal bone tissue. Bones become weak and brittle resulting in fractures, pains, disfiguration, lack of mobility, incapacity etc.
In our clinic we have state-of-the-art equipment to calculate bone density while our specialised doctor can diagnose easily and fast osteoporosis way before bone fractures may occur.
Main reasons for predesposition or cause of osteoporosis:
- Being a woman
- Low estrogen levels in women after menopause.
- Low levels of estrogen from the abnormal absence of menstrual periods in premenopausal women due to hormone disorders or extreme levels of physical activity.
- A smaller or petite physical constitution.
- Sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise).
- Excess smoking or consumption of alcohol, cafeine, red meat.
- Other diseases like: hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, rheumatoid arthritis and diseases of the digestive system.
- Age (after 50 the risk rises).
- Family history of osteoporosis.
- Deficiency in Calcium or vitamin D.
It should be noted that osteoporosis also affects men. Today the diagnosis of bone density is performed through DEXA technique in different areas of the body and especially those areas prone to fractures like: arm wrists, lumbar spine and hips.
